“First established in 1952 by Dudley and Madge Rider, this started out as a family fishing and saddlery store”, says owner Mike Rider. “Over the years they saw many changes in fishing, from landlines (cotton) to cane, fibreglass and now graphite and even nano rods”. The business moved into new premises in 73 Commerce St in 1965 where it remains today. “I joined the business back in 1978, followed by my wife, Sharon in 1988”, he says. The store is now regarded as a one stop shop for all sporting, recreational equipment and associated accessories including: Fishing, Shooting, Camping, Watersports, Racquet, clothing, sports and casual footwear and all Ball Sports. Mike and his staff have vast knowledge in their chosen sports and also provide an in store repair service second to none. Both Surf and Boat Saltwater fishing are a specialist side of the business with custom made surf rods an important feature. Major fishing brands include Shimano, Penn, Fin-Nor, Kilwell, Tica, Daiwa, Okuma and Black Magic. Also available are a full range of air guns, soft air, rim fire, centrefire rifles, shotguns and accessories, including scopes, ammo knives and binoculars. After many years of serving the contestants and supplying them with all the necessities of a major fishing contest, Mike Rider and the team will continue to be active with the 2024 Ninety Mile Beach Snapper Bonanza. The Rider team consists of Char Ryan who looks after the extensive (Ridgeline) clothing range and footwear and Tim Doyle, (NZ master rod builder) the fishing and shooting specialist. Seasonally, with the onset of summer the store also offers a large range of water sports and camping gear. “When next in Kaitaia, a visit to Riders Sports is a must, even if only to make the most of our team’s knowledge of the area’s best fishing, camping, hunting spots and local events”, says Mike.
